Sustainability Planning
With experience covering multiple sustainability topics, our team is interested in projects that address and integrate sustainability into neighborhood and city plans and programs.

The 1987 UN report, Our Common Future or “Brundtland Report,” defined sustainability as:

Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

These needs are often assessed using the triple bottom line – recognizing that people today and in the future require a thriving economy, a sound natural environment, and a social community to support their health, wealth, and happiness. In recent years, Washington State has seen increased attention on various sustainability topics, including climate change, clean energy production, local food security, multi-modal transportation and increasing the green building stock.

Making sustainability a reality in our neighborhoods and cities requires a holistic perspective reaching across all areas of the community, the environment, the economy and governance. Martin & Sanders Consulting, LLC, has experience bringing sustainability into greater focus: with gap analyses of developments to select sustainability criteria such as LEED-ND standards; creating greenhouse gas emission inventories using ICLEI-generated CACP software; and producing independent sustainability plans with small cities,

Types of service we provide:

  • Local Sustainability Plans — a client-collaborative plan that assesses local conditions, sustainability frameworks, and current best practices tailoring appropriate strategies for achieving results in the community.
  • Goal-specific GIS analysis & Ground-Truthing — provide assistance against specific sustainability criteria, such as Bicycle & Pedestrian Plans, Local Food Planning, or integrating sustainability into your comprehensive plan.
  • Greenhouse Gas Inventories — conduct an inventory of heat-trapping emissions within a municipality with ICLEI-Member cities. Note: Future projects of this type would require ICLEI permission, provision of ICLEI software and ICLEI membership for the client city.

See LEED-ND as a New Urbanist Metric, 2009

City of Snoqualmie ~ Project management developing a local sustainability plan with Sterrett Consulting and a group of graduate students. Work included public engagement, tool and program research, implementation strategies, indicator compilation, and final report.

        See Snoqualmie Sustainability Strategy, 2009

City of Edmonds ~ Use of ICLEI-developed CACP software to compile, calculate, and report on emissions data within the municipal boundary.  Note: Future projects of this type would require ICLEI permission, provision of ICLEI software and ICLEI membership for the client city.
